Keep Your Pet Safe and Calm this Halloween
Halloween can be a spooky time for our furry friends. Costumes and masks, crowds of people, constant doorbells and strangers approaching your home…it’s enough to send any pet into anxiety overdrive! Fortunately there are ways you can help manage the Halloween stress for your dog or cat. Read on for some common sense tips to make sure everyone in your household stays sane and safe this Halloween!
Nix the doorbell
If your dog gets wound up every time the doorbell rings, consider creating a candy dispensing station OUTSIDE your home to head the trick-or-treaters off before they hit the buzzer. Grab yourself a comfortable chair, stock up on snacks and your favorite beverages, and enjoy the parade of ghouls and goblins who troop up to your door.
Play soothing music or background television
Unless your home is totally isolated, you an almost guarantee there will be lots of commotion outside on Halloween night. Even if you follow our first tip and avoid the doorbell, you’ll still have chattering kids, crying babies, and lots of masked and costumed humans traipsing across your property. Playing calming music or leaving the television running can help drown out the outdoor noise and chaos and soothe your anxious pet.
Keep the candy away from your pet
Dogs and chocolate just don’t mix—it’s the methylxanthines in chocolate that can be toxic to dogs. In general, the darker and more bitter the chocolate, the worse it is for your dog. Halloween night can be particularly scary if you dog gets into the candy stash. PetMD has a great toxicity calculator that will come in handy in the event of exposure. But the safest course of action is just to keep the pups away from the candy!
Distraction is key
Consider stocking up with a few new toys to distract your pet on Halloween night. If your dog is a chewer, a long-lasting chew bone or rugged toy can occupy him or her for hours, and provide some much-needed distraction when the kids start arriving!
If CBD oil is part of your pet’s wellness routine, consider giving them a dose early in the evening on Halloween to help them stay calm. Although our clinical trials to date have focused on epilepsy and arthritis, many of our customers tell us the CBD oil works wonders for their pet’s anxiety. Our oil has been tested safe and effective in multiple clinical trials at Colorado State University, so you can give it to your pet with confidence on Halloween or any day!
