Happy Memorial Day from ABSC Organics
This Memorial Day weekend, we’ll be remembering and honoring all the heroes who have given their lives in defense of the United States. While many Americans will be spending time at the beach and at patriotic backyard barbecues, others will take the opportunity to visit the many war memorials in Washington, D.C. or the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia. Perhaps some of the dog lovers out there will visit the Military Working Dog Teams National Monument at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. Dedicated to the idea that not all heroes are human, this monument honors the canine soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
Here at ABSC Organics, these canine heroes are especially near and dear to our hearts. We spend our days working to ease suffering in dogs and other companion animals, and we know first hand the grit, courage, and tenacity that these animals can show. So this Memorial Day weekend, we wanted to share a few stories of canine war heroes, and offer a flash sale in their honor. Read on for some inspiring tales of wartime valor!
Short But Spectacular: Sergeant Stubby — World War I
Sergeant Stubby was a mixed breed bull terrier smuggled over to Europe by Private J. Robert Conroy. He became the mascot of the 102nd Infantry, 26th “Yankee” Division, but he soon proved he was more than a mascot. He alerted sleeping troops to an incoming gas attack and helped to capture a German spy. When his involvement in the spy capture earned him his Sergeant rank, he became the first dog to receive a rank in the U.S. military.
Decorated Hero: Chips — World War II
Chips was a family pet—a Shepherd-Collie-Husky mix from New York who was owned by Edward Wren. Wren loaned Chips to the military during the war, where he served in Africa and Italy. During the invasion of Sicily, Chips attacked a nest of Italian machine gunners, who quickly surrendered. Chips was wounded during that attack, but he went on to help capture an Italian patrol group later that night. Chips was awarded a Distinguished Service Cross, a Silver Star, and a Purple Heart, and quickly became a beloved hero back in the states. Although the military eventually decided that only humans could earn those medals, Chips’ story lives on as one of true heroism under fire.
Elite Canine Warier: Cairo — War on Terror
Cairo is a Belgian-Malinois who went through a 200-step elite training regimen before joining the U.S. Navy Seals. In May of 2011, he accompanied Seal Team Six when they raided Osama bin Laden’s compound in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad. Cairo’s role on the team was to guard the perimeter and detect explosives. After the successful raid, Cairo met President Obama at the White House and eventually retired to live with his handler, where he snuggles with a security blanket and helps with the groceries. Cairo was named Time’s Animal of the Year in 2011.
