CBD news Denver Post

ABSC Organics in the News!

Not all CBD oil is created equal

New year, same story. CBD oil is hot, sales are climbing, and new participants are flocking to the market, hoping to cash in on the CBD gold rush. But with federal oversight lagging behind the market and regulations murky, it’s buyer beware when it comes to this hemp-based product. Just ask Bill Bookout, president of the National Animal Supplement Council, who warned consumers about unscrupulous and poor-quality operators in a recent Denver Post article. “Probably 95 percent of the industry participants are responsible,” he said, “but what’s dangerous is the fly-by-night operative that wants to cash in.

ABSC Organics founder offers CBD counsel

“It’s really the Wild West out there,” said S. David Moche, founder of Applied Basic Science, a company formed to support Colorado State University’s veterinary CBD research and now selling CBD online. He advises consumers to look for a certificate of analysis from a third-party testing laboratory to ensure they’re getting what they pay for. “Testing and labeling is going to be a critical part of the future of this industry,” Moche said.

Use caution and common sense

If you’re interested in trying CBD oil for your pet’s pain, seizures, anxiety, or other symptoms, we hope you’ll buy from us. But wherever you buy, we urge you to use caution and common sense. The slickest website isn’t always backed up by the best science, and the biggest and boldest claims aren’t always verifiable. We won’t promise you that ABSC Pure Organic CBD Oil™ is a miracle cure for every ailment, and we won’t make grandiose and unsupported claims. We will promise you that we’re the only veterinary CBD company who has invested the time and resources into multiple clinical trials at a leading veterinary research institution. We’ll promise you that the glowing testimonials and stories you see on our site are true tales from real customers. And we’ll promise you that our products are always tested for quality, consistency, and purity. Because we care about pets, and we care about doing it right. You can count on that.

Blastomycosis in Dogs – Fungal Infections | ABSC Pure Organic

Recently a valued customer reached out to us with an unusual story. We have hundreds of pet owners who give their dogs ABSC Pure Organic CBD Oil™ to help with osteoarthritis, seizures, and anxiety. We know our CBD oil routinely helps canine patients deal with cancer and the ravages of chemotherapy. And we know that some skin issues resolve with the addition of CBD oil. But Ashley Gaer’s story of her beloved Newfoundland Cass and his experience with Blastomycosis was something new.

Blastomycosis typically attacks male large breeds who spend a lot of time in the water.
Cass (brown) and his brother Elmore (black) both enjoy benefits from ABSC Pure Organic CBD Oil™.

What is Blastomycosis?

Blastomycosis is a systemic fungal infection caused by an organism that thrives in rotting wood and wet soil. Dogs that spend a lot of time in the water and in wet environments – especially male large breed hunting and sporting dogs –  are most susceptible to Blastomycosis infections.

Ashley’s dog Cass is a Newfoundland – clearly part of the susceptible population. Newfies are large breed working dogs who are most at home in the water. These gentle giants even have webbed paws, and they are known for their ability to perform dramatic rescues in icy waters.

What Causes Blastomycosis?

Most canines get Blastomycosis by inhaling the fungal spores. The spores travel through the dog’s respiratory system and become large yeast-like organisms that multiply throughout the body. Cass was diagnosed with Blastomycosis in 2018. Ashley suspects that he inhaled the spores while doing water rescue work in an area where the fungus is prevalent.

Blastomycosis Signs and Symptoms

According to Dr. Karen Becker, symptoms include loss of appetite, fever, weight loss, inflammation of the iris of the eye, coughing, and pus-filled skin lesions. More severe symptoms can include sudden blindness, lameness, and seizures.

Cass’s presentation was a little different than most. His symptoms have included bone, muscle, and joint issues, coupled with respiratory complications that initially looked like kennel cough. Ashley feels strongly that using ABSC Pure Organic CBD Oil™ as a complementary therapy–along with prescribed anti-fungal medications–has allowed her Newfie to keep up his appetite and stamina. “I think it really has helped Cass,” she says, “because he has NEVER lost his appetite and frankly, any energy, during his fight with it. This is a sickness that kills dogs and he has only once had a flare up and even then, I had him on the 2400mg and he recovered in 24 hours.”

How is blastomycosis diagnosed?

Blastomycosis is a tricky diagnosis, as the signs and symptoms mimic cancer and/or lung infections. If misdiagnosed, your pet can have permanent or fatal damage. If your veterinarian diagnoses a lung infection and prescribes antibiotics, those antibiotics can actually put your dog in more danger. If you suspect your pet may have had exposure to the Blastomyces dermatitidis fungus, ask your veterinarian to test for fungal infection for finalizing the diagnosis and treatment plan.

The gold standard for diagnosing blastomycosis involves examining lung tissue, cells from the lymph nodes cells, fluid from skin lesions, and fluids from the trachea. The tests will be looking for the presence of the Blastomyces fungus. Your vet may also order a urine analysis and an X-ray of your pet’s lungs.

Traditional Blastomycosis Treatments

The standard treatment for Blastomycosis infections is a long course of anti-fungal medications. Some dogs may stay on the meds for many months as they battle the fungus, and marked weight loss often occurs. Ashley says the anti-fungals were rough on Cass’s system, but stresses the importance of sticking with the medications for their entire prescribed course. She credits the CBD oil with easing the side effects and allowing Cass to stay strong throughout the treatment.

How Can CBD help with blastomycosis treatment?

If your dog is diagnosed with Blastomycosis, you should follow your veterinarian’s advice and stick to the prescribed course of anti-fungal treatments as directed. CBD oil is not a cure for Blastomycosis, and we have not done any clinical studies related to fungal infections at this time. We are, however, intrigued by Ashley’s story. She feels strongly that adding ABSC Pure Organic CBD Oil™ into Cass’s treatment regimen has helped Cass survive and thrive through a brutal course of anti-fungals. She tells us that she is convinced the CBD oil helped Cass keep an appetite, which helped keep his energy high and his immune system strong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can dogs survive blastomycosis?

Dogs can absolutely survive blastomycosis. The key to beating this fungal infection is prompt and accurate diagnosis, following the anti-fungal treatment protocol prescribed by your veterinarian, and supporting your dog’s overall health and wellness with a healthy diet, plenty of rest, and wellness supplements to keep their appetite up and energy high.

Is blastomycosis contagious from dog to dog?

Blastomycosis cannot be transmitted from dog to dog. Dogs contract blastomycosis by inhaling the spores of the Blastomyces dermatitidis fungus—typically in areas that are very moist with plenty of decaying organic matter.

Can blastomycosis recur?

Recurrence or relapse from a cured blastomycosis infection is rare, but can happen. Approximately 20% of dogs infected with blastomycosis with experience recurrent or relapse in the months and years after successful treatment.

Two Clinical Studies: Osteoarthritis and Epilepsy

ABSC Pure Organic CBD Oil™ For Dogs Used in More Clinical Trials

Aided in large part by the commitment and investment of science-driven firms like ABSC Organics, cannabis research for veterinary patients is cautiously advancing. Dr. Stephanie McGrath, a neurologist and assistant professor at Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, is on the forefront of veterinary cannabidiol research. She has completed two recent clinical studies on the effects of cannabidiol in dogs with epilepsy or osteoarthritis. This work was recently published in The Journal of the American Veterinary Association:

“An initial investigation involving 30 healthy research animals found that CBD was tolerated and resulted in measurable blood concentrations. Dr. McGrath expects results of that study will be published this year. Data from the other studies are being analyzed, but preliminary results of the epilepsy investigation were promising enough that, in January, Dr. McGrath began a three-year crossover study of CBD for epilepsy in dogs with a $350,000 grant from the American Kennel Club.”

ABSC Organics is a Proud Partner in Advancing the Field of Veterinary CBD Research

ABSC Organics provided the funding and CBD oil for Dr. McGrath’s study. We are deeply committed to raising the bar for research and analysis in this arena, and we are proud to partner with the scientists who are leading the push for better data and rigorous clinical analysis.
